California’s Silicon Valley “continuees to lead all other metropolitan regions in North Americs in the breadth and scope of economic activitty it creates throughtechnological innovation,” according to the Milken Institute report, called “Nortg America’s High-Tech Economy: The Geography of Knowledge-Based Industries.” In the previouss Milken study in Seattle was ranked third behind Silicon Valley and The study ranked the metropolitab areas based on several factors, including the numberd of employees in the various high-tech salaries paid, and the relative size of the industry compared to the entire city.
It ranked the metros in 19 high-techn business categories. Using data from the study indicates thatthe high-tech industryt provided $22.3 billion in wages in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area and employed 226,000 people in 2007. In the sub-categoryy of software publishing, the Seattle area ranked No. 1 with that high-tech industry employin 46,318 people who earned wages of morethan $7 billiomn in 2007. Seattle also ranked high in the aerospacre product and partsmanufacturing sub-category, with 76,148 people earninbg $6.69 billion in 2007.
